Best of 2016: Twin Star Exorcists
By Dustin Cabeal
I started my journey with Twin Star Exorcists the anime, which wasn’t good. You might see it on a different list because that’s how little I liked it. I had a couple of free volumes of the manga, and so I said screw it, I’m going to read these. I’m so happy I did. While the story of Twin Star Exorcists follows the typical shonen journey, it’s the pace in which the story plays out that makes it different. Storylines that would typically be a year or two worth of stories play out in one volume. Sometimes, half of one volume.
To give an example, at one point in the story we learn that our duo (the twin stars) have two years to train before going to an island to fight more demons and shit. I thought to myself, damn, this is going to kill the pacing of the story watching them bullshit train for two years. On the next page, the caption read “Two years later, ” and I was so fucking pleased. It's things like that, in which the story doesn’t waste time, it doesn’t do filler but instead keeps it’s frantic “gotta get it done” pace. But it never wavers in quality, and that includes the art.
