Review: KonoSuba 2! E.02

By Dustin Cabeal

While I enjoyed the first episode, it was not without its share of problems. Most of those problems are back with the second episode, but the show is feeling more like it’s old self now.

Darkness doesn’t return this episode, and I know you’re thinking, “Oh no, what will the show do without her?” Fear not, it’s doing what a lot of successful harem comedies that were never expected to make it to a second season do… they’re just adding new women each episode. We’re up to two already! The lawyer/government person returns and gives the trio a job. They have to take care of all the giant toads they woke up when Megumin was using explosion magic as a distraction. Cue the hilarious toad battles.

The battle is broken up by Megumin’s self-proclaimed rival. Get ready for a Japanese joke that doesn’t translate because her name is Yunyun! Don’t fucking ask me why that’s funny because I have no idea. They attempt to have a battle by using a friendship orb, and it is hilarious. There’s another bath scene which was funny and ended the only way it could in this world.

I hope that another character doesn’t show up in the next episode and that the show remembers that it’s working towards the Devil King’s defeat rather than Kazuma paying off this Lord which is what’s happening currently.

The animation looked better this episode. Why the promo poster looks so strange is beyond me, but this episode looked normal. I don’t know if they got a lot of feedback and changed something, but it didn’t look off. Though, I could have gotten used to it already and not noticed.

This episode is funny as hell in places, but it’s a little all over the place at the moment. It’s forgotten the main reason Kazuma is in this world, and while I don’t expect him to go and defeat the Devil King or Demon King or whatever, I don’t have any interest in watching him hang out and do the same thing day in and day out. His difficult adventure is what’s amusing and charming about this show and this second season has yet to capture that. Success has a terrible way of ruining a good thing, and I hope that’s not the case here.

Score: 3/5
