Review: KonoSuba 2! E.06

By Dustin Cabeal

What I realized after writing my review for the fifth episode of KonoSuba and thinking about the sixth episode, is that this is a great transition episode. It doesn’t necessarily wrap up the last arc or start the next one, but it's buffering between the two while going back to a staple of the series. That said, there’s going to be spoilers ahead.

You will likely spot the one thing that is out of place at the start of this episode. It was obvious to me because it didn’t match the design of the series and that was the kotatsu. It was weird to me, but there is a reason for it. I won’t spoil that reason for you because it’s not the staple in the series that I want to discuss. It does make for some hilarious scenes as Darkness and Megumin want to go outside, but Aqua and Kazuma want to stay in where it’s warm. For Kazuma, it’s underneath the kotatsu, and he’s surprisingly defensive against Darkness and Megumin.

After Kazuma is finally removed, they go to get his new equipment which is three minutes of dumb jokes that made me grin from ear-to-ear. The group takes a mission killing some lizards, and the battle goes the way all their battles do, they succeed, but in the worst possible way. Kazuma dies… again. He visits Eris while Aqua repairs his body and suddenly he realizes why he’s not attracted to any of the other women in his group and develops feelings for Eris.

Which is great because the only way he can see her is to die. He decides to be reborn instead this time, but then everyone starts fucking with his body, and he asks to go back. What Kazuma doesn’t get and likely still doesn’t, is that the women in his group do rely on and care for him. It’s not necessarily sexual either, as I’ve said before he has different relationships with the different characters. Aqua is more like a friend, Megumin is like a little sister and Darkness… I don’t know, that one is weird. It becomes very clear that they don’t want him gone as much as he wants them gone, which is funny as well because he hates them all so much due to all the headaches they cause him.

It’s why this series is so enjoyable; it’s a harem comedy without the romance. Kazuma is stuck in a situation that most men would probably be happy in, but he has too much intelligence to be happy with their mess ups and mistakes that cause him so much trouble. With this being a fantasy otherworld story it lacks a lot of realism, but this one element is very realistic because not everyone is blinded by beauty.

While this episode isn’t quite as good as the last and it feels a lot like the entire first season being done, again and again, I still enjoy the hell out of this show. I hope it does more in the long run, but it’s really good at what it’s doing and for that reason, I can’t hate it. It would almost be dumb of the creators to change what they have just because, it’s a smarter move, but not an adventurous one which is ironic for sure.

Score: 4/5
