Farlaine the Goblin ~ Completing the Series by Farlaine the Goblin

We've covered Farlaine the Goblin on the site previous and it's a great series that's right at home in the all-ages category. The creator (who is also Farlaine the Goblin) has taken to kickstarter to finish the series off and though we're not covering kickstarters anymore, this is a project we've been very supportive of and I couldn't pass up the opportunity to talk about it and give it some support. Check it out on the link below.

How Strong Is Spider-Man?

Spider-Man is a superhuman hero whose powers evolved as a result a being bitten by a radioactive spider. He gained the abilities of enhanced agility, a precognitive sense when he’s in danger (spider-sense), and above average strength. As a fan I have always wondered just how strong is Spider-Man? There seem to be conflicting displays of his level of strength throughout comics, TV and movies. In this article I’ll examine differing examples of Spider-Man’s strength at work.

Spider-Man 1

  1. In Spider-Man 2 during his battle with Doctor Octopus a train car is damaged causing it to race out of control toward certain doom. Amazingly Spider-Man moves to the front of the car, puts his feet down on the tracks and is able to slow it down before it goes over the edge of an unfinished road. Wow. Sure he faints at the end but not before flexing those Maguire muscles. Best actor to play Spider-Man to date btw.

Spider-Man 2

  1. In the Amazing Spider-Man #120 Spider-Man takes on the Incredible Hulk. As we all know the Hulk is no lightweight and with gamma radiated strength and giant pecks Spidey was in for one hell of a fight. But strangely the not incredibly sized Spider-Man is able to do this...

Spider-Man 3

  1. In the classic 90’s Spider-Man: The Animated Series Spider-Man faces off against the Scorpion. He wins of course but not before the Scorpion puts him in a violent bear hug where Spidey’s internal monologue explains how he can’t breath and is being crushed to death. Where are those Maguire muscles?

So how strong is Spider-Man? After reviewing these examples I’ve come to the conclusion that it depends on the story being told. It is consistent that although Spider-Man is stronger than an average man his ability to withstand pain and avoid injury comes more from his agility than his actual strength level. He can stretch his body beyond the reaches of normal like when he stopped the train car. He can also adjust his weight to put it all into one final blow to knock the Hulk on his green butt. This doesn’t make him invulnerable. Just durable and flexible. He’s strong enough to be a hero and human enough to be an interesting character.

Twisted tales of horror continue in Puppet Master: The Wooden Boy

Film and comics collide in THE WOODEN BOY as the Puppets go toe-to-toe with the human-sized doll, Camille! This trade paperback collects issues 8-11 of the ongoing series. For nearly twenty years a life-sized puppet has tormented the children of the Bouldeston Institute for Mentally Troubled Tots and Teens. When her scare tactics escalate to murder, a young patient named Anthony seeks out the Puppets hoping they can stop their former Master's rampage. Things, however, are never as simple as they seem. An original story based on Full Moon Entertainment’s cult classic film series PUPPET MASTER! PUPPET MASTER: WOODEN BOY TPB can be enjoyed by fans of the films as well as fans of the ghastly world of horror. You don’t even need to have read previous issues of PUPPET MASTER to appreciate this story arc.

The series is written by Shawn Gabborin (FRACTURE), who creates an intense story filled with mystery and mayhem... lots and lots of mayhem! He’s joined by artist Antonio Ontiveros and colorist Dan Olvera, who both bring Blade, Leech Woman, Pinhead and many other puppets to life with their artwork.

Eric Shea of Weird Science said “Shawn Gabborin does a fantastic job in blending his stories with what's come before and with incredible art all the way through, this continues to be the best place to continue the Puppet Master fun that started from the film series.” and Nat Behmer of Wicked Horror said “I’ve been intrigued a lot by this third arc because it’s never been entirely clear exactly what was going on—in a good way—but everything comes to a head in this issue with stunning results. No pun intended, but Puppet Master (#11) just kills it.”

This story adds to the mythology of the PUPPET MASTER series in many ways and will leave you with questions you’re dying to know the answers to. Root for Anthony, who has some mysteries of his own, as he navigates his way through the halls of Bouldeston Institute for Mentally Troubled Tots and Teens.

PUPPET MASTER: THE WODDEN BOY is available for pre-order at your local comics chop (Diamond Order code: APR16 1144) and hits shelves in June.

Interview: Monty Nero Talks About Death Sentence: London

Note: This interview wasn't conducted by Comic Bastards.

Death Sentence London is in bookshops 19th April - a graphic novel about Verity Fette, aka Artgirl, uncovering a conspiracy at the heart of the British government. Meanwhile she's coming to terms with contracting G-plus - an STD which'll kill her in six months while enhancing her abilities. Series co-creator and writer Monty Nero tells us more,

Monty NeroHi, Monty. So what’s Death Sentence London all about?

Well at its simplest it’s about an STD that kills you in six months while making you great at doing whatever you love. In Verity’s case that’s art, so she’s learning to manipulate imagery with her mind. And as she’s getting to grips with that she’s hunted down because of what she’s discovered about London’s Mayor Tony Bronson.

Who else is in the story?

It focuses more on women this time. I like to focus on things I haven’t seen before in comics and there aren’t that many writers that have portrayed realistic women well – with a few notable exceptions - so there’s lots of fresh snow to explore there.

Verity’s based on a few people I’ve known. She’s passionate about art but she’s frustrated by how to realize her vision. She’ll do the right thing, but only when she has to ‘cause she basically wants to get on with her life.  I think we all know people like that.

Then there’s a new character, Roots, who’s hustling to survive. Contracting G-plus gives her the power to change her life, initially by extending her drug dealing operation at the expense of other gangs. Which brings her into conflict with Retch, a gangster who rots whatever he touches. He articulates that dispossessed and bitter inner city feeling. It all culminates in an explosive gang war and rioting on the streets.

Verity left and Roots right

Rioting seems to be a theme throughout Death Sentence. How do the two books tie together?

Well they’re both self-contained, while developing the same themes and characters. So you can pick either up or read them together and be happy. While Mike Dowling was drawing the riots in the first story, the London riots erupted around him in Hackney. He was living above a shop, and he was sleeping with his shoes on ready to bolt if it got firebombed so I followed it all extra closely through him. And the riot in Death Sentence London explodes just as the Mark Duggan riot did, except in our case its Mary Duncan who gets shot.

This is a decade of rioting and civil disobedience worldwide, whether it’s the Arab Spring, Ferguson, Occupy, Ukraine. Social media has given ordinary people a way to mobilize and express their anger. Governments are spooked by that, increasing surveillance and militarizing the police. It’s a very dangerous situation and our liberty is at stake – so it couldn’t be more urgent.  The issue of power and the state, the rights of the individual over the rights of government, runs through the heart of the book.

You’ve got another new character, Jeb Mulgrew and a brand new artist in Martin Simmonds. Why’s that?

Mike and I both got work from American publishers after the first book, and while I still have time to write Death Sentence scripts the art is more labor intensive so Mike can’t do two series at once. Martin is someone whose work I’d admired for a long time, with a similar gritty realistic style, so we thought he was the perfect guy to take over. He’s taken characters like Verity to another level and done some astounding pages.

Jeb’s an undercover agent sent by the Americans to find out more about the G-plus virus. He goes to the Island where they’re researching a cure and it becomes a kind of surreal and nerve jangling thriller at that point. On a technical level Jeb’s new to Death Sentence, so first time readers learn about the world as he does.

Thanks Monty. Death Sentence is in bookshops April 19th - 160 pages for £14.99/$19.99 from Titan Comics.

Source Point Press Announces Iktomi Graphic Novel

IKTOMI is a Dark Fantasy/Western Graphic Novel that will drag readers into the different worlds of Native American Mythology, post-Civil War America and Dark Magic, all perfectly blended. The well-crafted ensemble cast of rough and down to earth trailblazers of the West, brave Natives and sinister disciples of the Occult, promises to deliver exciting stories filled with blood, grit and glory. It’s “Matrix meets American Vampire meets Kingsway West”. This 25-issue Graphic Novel is the brainchild of writer Leonardo Masetti and producer Pier Paolo Piccoli, two native-born Italians sharing a common passion for mystery, fantasy and, obviously, famed movie director Sergio Leone.

The story follows two separated dimensions fighting for absolute domination of the Human Race. In one - the Upper World - an unusual pair of heroes (Jack Freeman, a white-man-turned-Lakota-Shaman, and Medicine Eagle, a wise Lakota Holy Man) battle against road agents, Blue Coats and terrifying creatures from Native American Mythology. The other dimension is a dreadful and frightful place called Xibalba, ruled by an evil Minister of the Occult called Huracan. An Indian Trickster Spirit, known as Iktomi, is the link between these two dimensions. Evoked by Huracan, he is given the task of electing disciples among the Human Race who, through Dark Magic spells and ceremonies, will allow Huracan and his Army to invade and conquer Our World. Among this herd of devoted disciples, there's Sly, a ruthless bandit who also murdered Jack’s girlfriend (Allie Morrison). A memorable clash soon erupts, and the fate of all Humanity will lie in the hands of Jack, Medicine Eagle and their…”doubles” in Xibalba.

The Graphic Novel is penciled, inked and toned by Ryan Gutierrez (who also penciled, inked and colored the Covers) and lettered by Joseba Morales. Ryan's ability to bring to light all the characters’s intense cinematographic expressions has been matched by Leonardo’s skills in creating authentic, unique and signature dialogues, making Iktomi a one-of-a-kind saga.

Source Point Press has announced that the first Volume of this brand new creator- owned Graphic Novel will hit the stores in May of 2016.

The primary goal of this Detroit-based indie Publisher is to bring quality new creator- owned content to readers in the form of books, graphic novels, and comics; and to raise recognition of lesser-known talent. They are best known for their titles in the horror and pulp genres.

Dark Horse Presents Brendan McCarthy’s Mind-Warping New Graphic Novel

Dark Horse Comics announces the release of Brendan McCarthy’s psychedelic comics opus Dream Gang. Collecting the story originally published in Dark Horse Presents, Dream Gang represents veteran comics creator Brendan McCarthy at his finest.

Dream Gang is a story that takes place in dreams entirely,” says McCarthy. “It is the story of a young man who lives a dreary, gray life. One night he has a vivid dream that connects him to a group of naturally gifted psychic voyagers known as the Dream Gang. The dream that follows changes him forever.”

A young man is transformed into a Dream Voyager while he sleeps by the mysterious Dream Gang. They are searching for a destructive dream bomb that has been implanted into one of his memories. But to find the bomb, a secret memory must be uncovered.

A Fantastic Voyage through the mind!

Dream Gang arrives on July 27 and retails for $14.99. Preorder your copy today at your local comic book store or favorite online retailer:
