Review: Godzilla: Rulers of Earth #8

The alien invasion continues as Woods and Chavez stow aboard the creature’s ship in the aftermath of the fight between Godzilla and Ogra.  Jet Jaguar lends the two stowaways a hand.  Meanwhile, the green aliens appear and spark a three-way fight between them, the humans, and the Cryog’s tentacled bunch. The cast of kaiju for this issue are Biollante, Godzilla, and some surprise monsters. No spoilers.  Just go out and but this because you will be satisfied.

GODZILLA_ROE_08_cvrAWe’ve got some great balance between the action and the fighting.  Matt Frank’s pencils do some good work depicting the slobber knocker between Godzilla and his rose/g-cell/soul of a Japanese girl counterpart, Biollante.  If you don’t understand that last reference, you are just not a true Godzilla fan.  If you do, you will enjoy this battle.  And, by the way, the theme of this issue seems to be tentacles.  Many aliens and monsters in this issue have them.  Go figure.

Additionally, Chris Mowry uses Jet Jaguar most effectively.  Old Jet never speaks a word, he shrinks down to human size, and he kicks sufficient kaiju ass.  I wish the silver robot could have stayed in the battle a little while longer.  Hey, IDW, I will write a Jet Jaguar spin-off for you that will have record-breaking sales.  You know where to find me.

In the meantime, enjoy the work that Mowry and Frank bring to this great on-going version of the King of the Monsters before IDW pulls the plug on this and replaces it with Godzilla: Age of Continuity Despair.

Review: The Final Plague #4

Like most people my age I have spent my fair share of time thinking about the zombie apocalypse. What would I do, how would I handle the situation, etc, etc. In recent years I’ve avoided the genre due to the fact that everyone has a take, an opinion and finds it fun to discuss it at great lengths. To put it plainly, what was once special and fun is now so mainstream that it’s as painful to hear about as news of a celebrity being arrested. When I read it’s a “new take” on the zombie genre I scoff because it’s usually not. So why am I talking about and reviewing The Final Plague? Because it’s actually different! At least it was until several other titles recently sprung up with a similar theme of rabies being the transmitter of the zombie virus. The Final Plague has been releasing bi-monthly which hasn’t stopped it from being interesting or enough time for me to forget about it, but it has given other series the opportunity to catch up. Just know that while those series are claiming to be a different take on the genre… again, they’re not.

The thing I enjoy about this book is the different perspectives; seeing people in different situations in different parts of the country dealing with the same overall situation, but different circumstances. In one case we’re following the lab that’s responsible for the outbreak. We see how they’re trying to handle the situation before it gets out of control. What they don’t know is that it is out of control.

Final Plague 4 PROOF-1Another side of the story has been a farming family in Idaho; the father of the family has been bitten and watching his frightened family and him dealing with the events is something everyone can relate to. I’d be hard pressed to tell you which aspect of JD Arnold’s story I’ve enjoyed more as he has created wonderful characters and dumped them into terrible situations.

Something that definitely sets this book apart is Tony Guaraldi-Brown’s artwork. His wonderful use of water colors makes this every panel a treat to look at. A prime example of his skills can be found on the first page. A dead and zombified woman’s face is in the foreground, while three blackened silhouettes stand in the background. It’s a powerful opening and it really only gets better from there. I would love to talk about other scenes, but it would spoil too much. I will say that cover isn’t just there for looks.

I almost wish there was more to say about this series and issue in particular, but it’s just solid from beginning to end. I’ve very exciting to read the ending and I don’t see how it could be a letdown considering each issue has been better than the last. I dabble in and out of zombie titles, but this is the one I make sure I get. That should tell you something considering how many z-books are shipping just this month and week alone.

Review: Transformers: Regeneration One #98

Transformers have always had a soft spot in heart, especially the classic Generation One version.  There is something special about these character that even to this day just sends a warm and fuzzy feeling down my heart.  Maybe it’s because these characters were my first exposure to nerdom and it just takes me back to a much simpler time in life. Anyway… enough nostalgia let’s get to the comic.  Transformers: Regeneration One has been a fun book to read for a while.  I enjoy that it still feels like the old TV/comic book of the 80’s. In issue #98 the Autobots led by Rodimus Prime and crew, are preparing a strategic attack hoping that the attack is successful against Jhiaxus forces. Meanwhile on earth Optimus Prime and Spike are waiting for the space bridge to open and greet their visitors from Cybertron, but when the bridge opens Fortris Maximus appears and for some strange reason attacks Optimus, and takes Spike with him. Back on Cybertron, Rodimus implements his strike plan against Jhiaxus only to find out that the strike didn’t work.  Jhiaxus then retaliates against Rodimus, and unleashes his army against the Autobots.  A huge battle ensues, and the Autobots are scattered all over the battlefield.

Transformers: Regeneration One is filled with a lot of action. Some friends are captured, others died, and Rodimus has to make a tough decision to save Cyberton and the Autobots. What left me wondering in this issue is what Starscream’s role is? It’s the only part of the story that was not fitting with the rest of the plot.  Aside from that one minor issue, It’s looking like issue ninety-nine is going to have some huge implication for Cybertron. The art in this issue, like in all Transformers issues was great. Great detail, robots looked solid and consistent and it still had the 80’s feel to Transformers.  Overall a solid read and a good setup for the final battle.

Review: Adventure Time – Winter Special 2014

The Adventure Time Winter Special 2014 is one of those books that is exactly what you knew it was when you picked it up. The surprises in this book, while pleasant, are few and far between. The book itself is four short stories, all about — wait for it — winter. In the first, (“Snow Hope”, written and illustrated by Luke Pearson) Jake and Finn get possessed jumpers that steal snow to make the world cozy, and it’s… a story? That happens? It’s got all the tropes that Adventure Time tends to lean on that risk it going stale. Jake does something vaguely stupid but well-intentioned, they piss off the Ice King, who turns out to not be SO bad, and then something else happens and it’s very ZAAAAAANY! Except it’s not really that zany and it’s also kind of boring. There’s an attempt at a twist ending, but still. A resounding “meh” from the universe.

The second story, “Pups in Peril” written and illustrated by Jeremy Sorese, is better, but not by a whole lot. I like Sorese’s art quite a bit. It’s got a character to it, and it feels like it’s been honed. It also sort of reminds me of Edward Gorey, which I am 1000% okay with. Where he struggles is the “sequential” aspect of “sequential art.” He has a decent script (BMO & Tree Trunks are the main characters, which, again — 1000% okay), and his art has promise, but the issue is basically one long chase scene that is impossible to follow. It’s set in an ice cave, and he uses the technique of the splash page with several distinct areas of action, which is all well and good, it just… fell a little flat. I’d love to see him do another issue that was set outside.

AdventureTime_WinterSpecial2014_rev_Page_02Third, there’s “A Sour Winter”, written and illustrated by T. Zysk, in which I came to terms with the fact that the only reason I hate The Earl of Lemongrab is that godforsaken voice. His dialogue and his predilection to hate literally everything in Ooo is something I find hilarious in print. Zysk’s art is clean, his writing is a children’s story with plenty of dirty jokes for adults, and it’s largely one man’s monologue about his pure hatred of winter. Think Krapp’s Last Tape, but instead of Beckett talking about the meaning of life through Krapp, its Zysk talking about how much he hates snow through an anthropomorphic lemon/failed genetic experiment.

Capping off the issue is “Eye Scream”, written by Janet Rose and Allison Strejlau, and illustrated by Strejlau. This one feels the closest to a good episode of Adventure Time. The gang is all together in an igloo, for some reason, having a picnic when they’re attacked by a monster made out of fried ice cream. It’s the “for some reason” part that makes all the best Adventure Time episodes for me (LSP is writing a book for some reason, everyone is going to a Halloween masquerade for some reason, &c.), so this one works the best for me as a story. I love Strejlau’s art on the Regular Show book, but here, it feels a little looser and a little tougher to track. I suppose I’m complaining about having to work hard, but this is America, and that’s just how I roll.

Overall, if Adventure Time is your thing, you’ll enjoy this book. It went quickly and I had fun reading it, but at the end of it, so what? It’s lightweight, and it says what it wants to right off the blocks. It’s like watching an ABC Family Christmas special; it’s very okay, if that’s the kind of thing you’re looking for, but you’re probably never going to feel the need to watch it again.

Everything Wrong With: Batman and Robin... Finally

Whoo... the only thing worse than watching Batman and Robin is watching clips of Batman and Robin. I tapped out at the six-minute mark. I couldn't stand watching it anymore.  Also fun fact, this is the very film that ruined cinema for me! Before this movie I literally liked everything. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3M8FC7uZj3M#t=13

Honest Trailers: RoboCop

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pGemfKLV1JA I mean it's Honest Trailers so they poke fun of it a little, but they basically agree with everyone else about the reboot which is that it shouldn't exist. Remember... don't watch the remake.

Microsoft Studios Buys Gears Of War From Epic Games

Whatever it takes to keep Epic from making another sequel like Judgement. No, seriously that game was terrible. Here's what Xbox Wire was told:

Today we're excited to announce that Microsoft Studios has acquired the rights to the “Gears of War” franchise from Epic Games, including rights to all existing and future games, entertainment experiences and merchandise. In addition, we are excited to announce that Black Tusk Studios in Vancouver, BC will take over development of the “Gears of War” franchise and that Rod Fergusson, former Director of Production at Epic Games on the “Gears of War” franchise, will join Microsoft and play a key studio leadership role at Black Tusk on the development of the franchise going forward. We had a chance to chat with Phil Spencer, Head of Microsoft Studios, Hanno Lemke, General Manager of Black Tusk Studios at Microsoft Studios, and Rod Fergusson about the big news.

I'm a fan of the series and it's really one of the factors that I weighed when it came time to buy an Xbox One over a PS4. So good on ya' Microsoft.  Now just don't fuck it up "Black Tusk".

Larfleeze # 7

LARFLEEZE_7

I have been enjoying Keith Giffen work with Larfleeze. He has given the character some great back story and even made him a bit more arrogant and crazier than when I first remembered in Green Lantern. In the next issue he’s back fully charged and he wants his butler back.

Dual Review: The Walking Dead #120

Unlike a group review, in a “Dual Review” two writers (in this case Jordan and Adam) will take a look at the issue and give a numeric score for the issue. This is still the “All Out War” story arc which has reached the half way mark. Jordan:

I take it all back. Negan is a f$%king s#$%head.

Damn. The Walking Dead is heating the hell up. If there was any doubt issue #120 proves that when Rob Kirkman plays cards, he goes all in. Bets are off and no characters are safe this issue. In a brilliantly terrifying setup Negan and his men have our man Rick’s precious community surrounded, lobbing grenades into the camp, the very walls that protect them now keeping them boxed into a blazing hell. It’s an idea that makes for tense as hell moments as you never know next where or who next to a fiery ball is going to erupt. To imagine great set-ups like that it takes a mind like Kirkman’s who weaves an aesthetic and emotional world that could be just as at home on a big screen as a comic.

Shout-out to Jesus this week, who pulls off an aerial move with a grenade that will satiate your inner Matrix and for Davis, whose shit-awkward and terrified correspondence with Negan about having a boner before meeting an untimely end made me laugh harder than I have at a comic book in a long time, “I’m excited like you… my dick and balls are hungry for death.”

Big character moments, heavy action and a whip smart action setups make this issue of TWD one of my favorite ever. Its heavy and high-octane and proves that The Walking Dead is here to stay. This much is for sure; the guys on The Walking Dead put on a hell of a show.

The Walking Dead #120-1

Adam:

Although the end of the last issue was almost expected as Holly was returned to Rick and his group, it made me very anxious for part 6 of “All Out War.”  Luckily, it did not disappoint except for a few gripes that I’ve had for a while in this series.  Since the last issue had a slower pace which built up to the realization of a zombified Holly, this one quickly got off to a high-octane start.  Denise gets bit in the arm by Holly right off the bat.  As that’s happening, Negan and company are raining grenades over the wall as Heath gets his leg blown off.  Pretty intense stuff as we’ve come to expect from this series.

To me, Dwight was the sleeper star of this issue.  Personally, I’ve really been looking forward to see where his loyalty lies.  Well, it’s clear in this issue that he’s on board with Rick.

As far as the negatives go, I hate how anticlimactic this issue ended up being in regards to Heath and Denise.  I thought they had to amputate Denise’s arm off and Heath would most likely die if they did that, meaning they would likely both die if nobody had a chance to amputate Denise’s arm.  At least have one of them die.  I mean Denise herself said that if they amputated her arm, she wouldn’t be able to save Heath.  But at least have her die since she sacrificed herself for Heath or something like that.  It gets old having everyone be ok and people who don’t matter die all the time.  It just makes me less sympathetic and have less attachment to the character.  I’ve been waiting for Carl to die since he got his eye blown off and survived that too.  I thought I was going to get my wish this issue, but I didn’t.  Rick brought Carl back in from the explosion that he was with in along with Andrea, and Denise is just chilling on the bed like ‘everything’s cool, I’m good, I saved Heath’s life-oh yeah and Carl’s not even burnt from that explosion.’  The beginning was so intense, with the feeling only to be totally bypassed at the end.

Overall though, this issue was awesome.  Negan made a good point at the end: even though they didn’t directly take out anyone important, they left behind a firestorm and it’s not like there’s a fire department to save Rick’s community from burning down.  Rick is clearly shaken by the events as he ends up passing out.  I think physically, mentally, and egotistically, Negan has done a number on Rick.  Both sides have taken damage in his issue and I don’t think there was a clear winner.  I’m curious as to see who makes the next move as we’re already halfway through this arc.

Score: Jordan – 5/5, Adam – 4/5

8-Bit Cinema: The Big Lebowski

Television shows, or movies that get the 8bit/16bit treatment can either be really great or really bad.  The ones that are really great you can tell because they put the time and effort to the game and you almost wish it was an actual game instead of a video.  Luckily this Big Lebowski video games falls on the I wish it was real category. I love the Big Lebowski, I have seen the movie so many times I can damn near quote the entire thing word for word and seeing it in 8 bit for was hilarious. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wu8wS5no0_U

Capo Toys Is Making Some New 7" Street Fighter Figures

I'm not familiar with Capo Toys or lead designer Rocco Tartamella, but I am familiar with Street Fighter! There have been a ton of Capcom's premiere fighting series over the years but none that I've personal said, "yeah... I'm gonna collect that one." These prototypes may just change that. The first wave will be Ruy, Chun-Li, Guile, Blanka and a 9" Sagat. Damn right he gets two more inches. Capo is looking to launch at EVO which is the coolest fighting game tourney in town! Then they'll head to SDCC of course and hopefully have the line out for the fall. What's everyone think of these bad boys or would you prefer them painted and done first?
