Review: Tokyo Ghoul vol. 13

We’re getting to the really good stuff now. With my manga reviews I do try and avoid mentioning the anime adaptations, but this week I haven’t been very successful in doing that. There is a reason to do so here because there has always been a fuss about Tokyo Ghoul Root A, deviating from the manga, but with the last volume and this volume of Tokyo Ghoul, I’ve seen how it’s come back around to the same point. It’s yet to be seen if this entire arc will play the same as the anime, but there are similarities.

Review: Golden Kamuy vol. 1

There’s gold in them thar hills… as they say. Golden Kamuy is a period story set after the Russo-Japanese War. I’m not big on period fiction unless it’s an era I particularly enjoy and so I wasn’t leaping up and down like a mad prospector for Golden Kamuy. It did entertain me as I read through its pages.

Review: My Hero Academia E.022

Okay so it’s official, Boku no hero academia is truly befitting of a place in MY top ten anime series (emphasis on mine and not on MyAnimeList). Every episode this season, so far, has been more rousing than the previous one, but this week’s episode was exceptional. All the episodes revolving around the sport’s festival have been thrilling as well as moving, but Uraraka and Bakugo’s fight was profoundly inspiring. The duration of their match was not brief like Yaoyorozu and Tokoyami’s fight, and stems primarily from the fact these two characters are part of the main cast. However, this episode was not merely about highlighting the face-off between two main characters, but it was also subtly about the enduring battle for equality among the sexes.

Well, well, well, this is a very interesting volume of Tokyo Ghoul. After the last volume, it seemed as if the manga and the anime had finally gone their separate ways, but here comes volume twelve smashing those expectations and continuing the comparison. What remains incredible about this brand is that even though the anime differs in a lot of ways from the manga, there has yet to be a point in which I firmly feel that one did something better than the other. The anime is good for its own reasons and so it the manga. The manga, whether you believe it or not, is really unlike any other mainstream manga on the market which explains at least some of its popularity.

Oh Goodnight Punpun, how I’ve missed you. The only thing that’s disappointing about reading Goodnight Punpun is that I can’t find anything else like it to read. Hell, I don’t even necessarily think I want to read anything like it, but it would be nice if there were an option. At the very least, someone could provide an artistic style similar to Inio Asano for all of us to enjoy, but I guess that’s what makes him original.

Master Keaton is a difficult series to review. Not because it’s bad and not because it’s complex, but because it would be a bit like reviewing every episode of a procedural show that’s solving a different case every episode. In many ways, that’s exactly what Master Keaton is doing, solving cases every episode.

After the last volume, there’s not a lot that this one can do to top itself. It’s still a great volume if you’ve been reading the series from the beginning, but it’s not as mind-blowing to the plot as the tenth volume of Tokyo Ghoul.

What is absolutely delightful about reading the new Ultraman, is the fact that the story is always finding new layers of drama to add to the story. I’m not even fully confident in Shinjiro’s abilities as Ultraman yet, nor is he, and we have three freaking Ultramen! On top of that, every time the kid catches a break to think and development himself, he’s thrust back into action. Oh, and did I say three Ultramen? Maybe math is off. Wink, wink.

Review: Mobile Suit Gundam: Thunderbolt vol. 2

Mobile Suit Gundam: Thunderbolt is interesting. Not in a “bad” way or even in a “wow, that’s totally different” kind of way, but rather in that it manages to tackle all the themes of war better than all the Gundams before it. The catch is, I wonder if it would be as good if we weren’t all so familiar with the themes of the previous Gundam series.

Alright Tokyo Ghoul anime fans, this is where the manga and anime go their separate ways. Obviously, anyone that’s familiar with Tokyo Ghoul has probably watched more of the anime than the manga at this point since the ninth volume just released last month, and the anime already has two seasons in the bag. I didn’t know when their path split, but now I do; volume 9.
