It’s time for another Rat Queens issue! I’m sure I’m not the only fan out there that’s been wondering what has been going on, and this issue mercifully starts to give us answers. Granted, it also gave me a lot more questions, but one step at a time, right? Keeping with the style of the last few issues we see yet another Rat Queen missing from the cover; this time it’s Violet who’s in the white silhouette. That leaves just Hannah and Betty on the cover. I wonder who will be the last gal standing? (For the record: I’m rooting for Betty).

Issue #8 of the Rat Queens doesn’t waste any time, throwing us right into the thick of things. The opening scene is that of Hannah and Sawyer Silver on a ship facing towards what has to be the gloomiest island I’ve ever seen. That combined with Sawyer’s statement of ‘this is the end,’ and I’m more than a little concerned about what is happening to Hannah, and worried about where the rest of the Queens are.

I’m not going to lie, I naturally just assumed the Rat Queens were famous (or notorious) enough for this girl to have heard about them without ever actually having met them. So imagine my surprise when Madeline heads downstairs and starts serving them! Not only that, but they (and by they I mostly mean Violet) know Madeline on a first name basis and everything. It’s pretty clear that Madeline worships Violet, but I also think it’s more than that – she sees her as a role model, this amazing adventurer capable of taking care of herself (and realistically Violet is probably the best one in the group to look up to…though there’s not a ton of competition).

It’s not Kurtis J. Wiebe’s fault that the magic isn’t there for Rat Queens anymore. The industry loved this creator-owned darling and copied the shit out it in numerous ways. The delays were unfortunate, but not a deal breaker. It’s just that when you pair the both of these two factors together, the magic just isn’t there anymore. A series I championed and loved that I own a shirt of is just not the same after so many setbacks.

I’m not going to sugar coat it, I feel off of this series with all the delays and art changes. It’s unfortunate, but it just happens. I feel terrible for Kurtis J. Wiebe because I’m sure it happened to a lot of other people as well. It was just a weird bunch of events that kept the book from chugging along and so here it is, continuing, but new.

Listen, I, like a lot of people, really enjoy Rat Queens. Writer/Creator Kurtis Weibe was thrown a major curve ball and unfortunately the series has never been consistent since. It's unfortunately, but it's off and on with new artists so damn often that I don't even know what to think anymore. Maybe it'll work out with Owen Gieni, let's hope.
