Welcome to the penultimate issue of Tynion IV’s Detective Comics run. Has it been incredible? Eh. Has it been bad? Eh. Now we are ending this run the only way this run knows how with an eh. The problem with the run that also is a huge problem with this issue is that there are so many great characters at play, but not enough time to see them do anything but be in the middle of the action. Like most issues, this is another one jam-packed with action. It refuses to take a breather as we go from scene to scene, its a wonder how this run of twice monthly, two-year comic run is supposed to wrap this arc up in the next issue. If it can be pulled off, then I salute Tynion, but as of this issue, I feel any ending would be way too rushed.

Finally. This is a word to describe the first story in DC’s anthology sampler in time for free comic book day. The trouble with this book though is it is a luxury item if you try to get it during free comic book day as it is the very large cost of 25 cents. Is it worth it? Beyond a doubt. If this review factored in price, then this will easily be a perfect score. This review does not, and instead will look at all three stories and grade them individually before the big reveal for the score of this issue!! (spoiler this issue is a 4/5).

Batman #46 continues the alternate timeline plot started in the last issue. Last we learned Bruce’s parents are alive, resulting in him never becoming Batman (but don’t worry, another familiar figure picks up the mantle – though he has no problem just killing the criminals and anyone else that gets in his way). He’s not with Selena either. This whole mess is courtesy of Blooster; this was his bright idea of a wedding gift.

Batman issue number 45 starts off a whole new plot, though it’s worth noting that in a warped way this all still has to do with the buildup towards the wedding. This is one of those issues where you kind of have to take a moment, breathe, and let it run its course until everything is explained. So please do bear with me! The cover should give you a pretty idea of how skewed things have become (for one reason or another) in this issue, as Batman is screaming for the death of Blooster Gold.

Batman #44 is a bit different from the previous few issues. As we near the date of the wedding, we see more and more of the preparations for it. This issue is mostly about Catwoman and her hunt for the dress, but it’s not like any of those shows on TV…this one is far more amusing.
This issue is actually telling us two stories at once, to help us better understand the Batman/Catwoman dynamics. The first story is based in the present and has Selena ‘shopping’ for a wedding dress. The second story is more like a collection of events from Bruce and Selena’s past; little moments that led them to where they are today.

Batman #43 ended with a bang, so to speak. Poison Ivy has taken control of almost every human being on the planet (with the obvious exceptions of Bruce Wayne and Selena Kyle). Being that they’re two of the last people left with free will, they’re feeling somewhat compelled to try and do something to stop what is happening. During their attempts, Bruce may or may not (read: totally did) pushed Ivy a little much and taken a full Superman punch to the face. Needless to say, that didn’t go over to well.

Gotham by Gaslight is the feature-length ‘Elseworlds’ movie that nobody asked for. For anyone not familiar with DC’s Elseworlds, they’re similar to the Marvel ‘What If’ titles. The short non-canonical stories range from funny to disturbing and change time, place, and sometimes even species of classic DC characters. Gotham by Gaslight asks one question: what would it be like if Jack the Ripper killed in Gotham? Bruce Wayne, Selina Kyle, Commissioner Gordon, and a host of other well known Batman characters are transported to the 1880’s. Here, Bruce Wayne looks to fund the first Gotham’s World Fair in hopes of bringing some light to Gotham. Unfortunately, the killing spree of Jack the Ripper pulls Bruce’s attention in another direction. Despite the time warp and serial killer addition, the Gotham in Gaslight is familiar- grime, gore, darkness, and masked vigilante justice. Is the concept intriguing? Sure. Was the original comic a good read? Yes. Was the movie good? No.

Issue #42 of Batman has one of the more dramatic titles I’ve seen lately, ‘Hunted by the Justice League.’ It reminds me of the Injustice series, even though I know that isn’t the case here. Based on the cover it isn’t hard to get a good idea of who is behind the fight of Batman versus the Justice League (hint: how many Batman villains do you know of that love plants, are frequently represented by the color green, and have been known to hypnotize people via toxins?).

Batman #40 starts off with Batman and Wonder Woman still stuck defending us against the everlasting horde, all so that the standard guard, the Gentle Man, can have a chance to visit his wife. The catch? The Gentleman may or may not have failed to mention the slight time difference between the two dimensions. I’m sure I’m not the only one that’s anxiously awaited the last two weeks, hoping that the hinted at event wouldn’t actually occur.

I want to start off with the one thing that irritated me with Mother Panic - Batman #1. Maybe I never noticed it in Mother Panic, but I wish they’d use actual curse words instead of Violet losing her “@!*&&#$” mind. I’m going to lose my @!&&#$ mind over that. I’m starting with the negative because the rest of this review is going to be a long-winded fawning over Mother Panic as a title, followed by a serious appreciation for the adventure Mother Panic - Batman #1 sets up.

Issue number 39 of Batman kicks off a new plot arc, and Wonder Woman fans will be pleased to see she is included (as is made obvious by the cover of this issue). I’ll confess that I didn’t think much of the title when I first saw it, the Secret of the Eternal Vow, but having fully read the issue I realize it carries a lot more weight than I would have originally assumed. I’m anxious to see the next issue, as not only do I want to see the conclusion, but I want to see the repercussions to said vow.

I have some regret for not putting this on my best of 2017 list. It’s likely to get a spot on this year’s list because already two issues in on this series, and it’s one of the best comics I’ve ever read. The mixture of the real-world and fictional DC world is balanced brilliantly making you forget that this too is a fictional world.

There have been a vast amount of TV shows, films and various games based on the likes of Superman, Batman, and Spiderman over the years; so you could say it’s games in their various forms, where comic book characters have really hit dizzy heights.

It’s only natural that after reading the title for issue number 38 that one would assume that this was another origin story for Batman. So imagine my surprise when I realized the focus was actually on Bruce Wayne, as opposed to Batman. I imagine people will have varying opinions on how this issue was handled, but I’ll confess I appreciated the twist towards the end, even if I didn’t necessarily enjoy the whole journey there.
