Aside from the incredibly stupid title of Tanaka-kun is Always Listless, this anime surprised me. For those of you that are confused, as I was, about the context of listless it’s just an extremely unmotivated person. Tanaka is so motivated that he gets tired while trying to eat, routinely puts his limbs at risk from falling asleep and can make you yawn just by looking at him. At first, I thought it would be the dumbest thing ever, but there was this silly charm to it as Tanaka continues to attract people into his orbit.
The show was very creative in the way that it kept Tanaka listless, but then also made him overcome obstacles. These obstacles usually being things that would prevent his goal of being completely listless. The animation was beautiful, the characters designed differently from the norm found across anime and manga, and the colors were spectacular.
This show doesn’t work on paper. Explaining it to you, hoping it sounds interesting, none of that works. If you sit down and just watch it, though, it’ll charm you into a nap.
