Interviews With Monster Girls was one of the last on my list of new anime to check out. I was just going to get around to it when I got around to it. Then I saw everyone shitting their pants over it and decided to bump it up on my list. I probably should have gotten to it when I got to it.
It’s not a bad show. The voice acting has a familiar cast that are all impressive. The animation is beautiful, and the pacing is solid. The problem I have is with the story and the logic of the world. Not a big problem, but one none the less.
The gist is that a biology teacher at a high school is writing his thesis paper on demi-gods. The world has demi-gods, and they co-exist with humans now but are still largely misunderstood. Which is where the first break in logic occurs. It seems like there would be some level of knowledge about them, at the very least scientifically, but there doesn’t seem to be.
Our biology teacher hasn’t been able to get any demis to let him interview them, but now he’s found four at his new school. Amazing coincidence.
I’m not sure of the tone of the show. It seems light-hearted and goofy. There could be a parallel between the demi girls and what it feels like to go to high school and feel like an outsider. There could be deeper lessons about excepting other people’s differences, but then the way the story is instantly segregating the demi girls runs counter to that. But then, maybe I’m taking the subject matter too seriously?
That’s part of what I’m struggling with, but the other part is that there’s a very harem comedy formula being followed here, but it's with an older man. I would love to think that the show is going to remain innocent and just show some bond between teacher and students, but there is one scene that alludes to more. I won’t spoil it, but watch for yourself and see if you agree or disagree.
It’s beyond me why this is one of the hottest shows of the new season. There’s a lot of good shows back this season and even a few new ones that have popped up. Hell, I would say that this first season of 2017 has been one of the strongest seasons or cour, in the last two years. I wouldn’t say that this is one of the best, but maybe it has the potential. I’ll stick with it through six and hope that it brings some surprises with it.
Score: 3/5
