Review: Laser Moose and Rabbit Boy

Laser Moose and Rabbit Boy is essentially for kids, but I think it’s a good palate cleanser for jaded comic readers as well. It’s simple, it’s funny and very meta as it takes a crack at storytelling found in classic comic books. The book is split into four stories and clocks in at 146 pages, which seems like a lot until you start reading it. It probably only took me twenty minutes or so to read it and I was delighted by it. The Laser-Moose-and-Rabbit-Boy-1stories all have a similar set up, Laser Moose is looking to bring the justice to the forest and Rabbit Boy is there to help, but ultimately his voice of reason. Laser Moose does in fact shoot lasers from his eyes. This tends to create more problems than it solves. For instance, in the first story he jacks up an alien space ship trapping the aliens on earth. He also destroys the forest as much as he saves it, which is just a great bit of meta commentary on the superhero genre as a whole.

The art is a strange beast. It walks a fine line between having enough detail or not enough detail. Creator Doug Savage is actually quite talented at knowing when enough is enough. Because of this is gives it a very kids book vibe. It reminded me a lot of books I would get from Scholastic growing up and that’s always a great memory to invoke. For the most part the animals are kept pretty realistic looking in design. There’s a few exceptions of course, but that’s the charm of the story.

Laser Moose and Rabbit Boy is fun and entertaining. I had a couple of actual laugh out loud moments which was nice. The rest of the book just left a smile on my face and reminded me that people will always find a way to make good comics, you just have to keep looking for them. If you have a kid, this is a great pick for them. If you don’t and you’re jaded and burnt out on comics, this is just a nice, fun slap in the face to tell you we’re supposed to enjoy this medium more than hate it.
