Review: Doctor Muscles – Journal Three

It’s been an interesting ride with Doctor Muscles. Perhaps the most interesting thing about this series has been the creator’s ability to capture a past era’s storytelling, without making it feel dated. I have said in my last two reviews that Doctor Muscles looks and feels like a story that would have been extremely popular in Heavy Metal Magazine back in the eighties. The setting and look play heavily into this, but the key thing is that it doesn’t read like an 80s comic. I recently read a comic that was attempting to read and feel like a 60s TV show and accomplished that goal. The problem was, it was fucking terrible for it. That is why Doctor Muscles succeeds because it doesn’t try to be an 80s comic.

Let me give some background info on this project before you get all excited about the names attached to it. This series is old, but it never finished. Seriously, the first three issues released in 2011 and basically launched the careers of Jason Latour and Chris Brunner. But they never finished the fucking thing. They did three out of the four issues at 12 Gauge Comics and then blew up and worked on other shit, mostly for the big two.

Here's a high concept for you. Motorcycles on drugs. Pricks the old ears up, don't it? However, that seems to be the Image publishing model right now, not so much selling us stories as much as idea fragments that are as abstract as they are catchy. Image adverts don't have to sell you a compelling story, rather relying on the cover copy that comes off like free association word salad. “A comic about beatnik elves, a time-traveling ocelot, and Lyndon Baines Johnson with a chainsaw.” I blame Manhattan Projects for this.

Oh simple, a giant space whale who has transcended into the 8th dimension was freed by Uma way back in issue #2 and acts like a teenager, so it obviously throws a planet-sized party for the three teen adventurers. And as they are, they behave like teens at a house party. Some of them fit right in, and others just wander and lean on walls awkwardly.

Just wait a week and go into your comic shop and as them for a left over copy, then it's free! Too bad none of the other Image peeps are celebrating this way... kind makes it look like Kirkman is the only one to care about the Publisher turning 25. I can't wait until they're 28, married, thinking about kids... maybe they'll get a dog first.
